The Four Pots
Also know as The big pot, little pot, the boolan and the skillet
As part of the ongoing restoration work parties which in the past have included the restoration of one of the side chambers at Digby bridge, this year are focusing our efforts on the Four Pots. This unusually named piece of canal architecture is situated less than half a mile from Digby bridge on the Grand Canal. It consists of three circular basins inter connected by tunnels and connected to the canal by way of a land rack. Its construction is dated some time in the late 1800’s but no exact date is known. Its purpose has been widely discussed but the most reliable is that it is an overflow. As the water enters the outer ring from the canal it spills over each ring, breaking down the force of the water and therefore when it exits it would not cause any damage to the river bank that it flows into. It is a very unique in Ireland and part of our national heritage. This year the Kildare branch is starting restoration work with the help of Waterways Ireland and under strict guidelines from Duchas. We do not intend to restore it to working order but it will again be seen as a glorious piece of architecture. If you would like to help with the restoration please contact us for further details. Work parties are held each first Saturday of the month at 2pm meeting at Digby Bridge near Sallins |
