Where to moor in Kildare ?If you are new to the waterways and you are looking for some places to visit, or to moor up a while, take a closer look. The locations listed below are popular mooring spots along the Grand Canal in the Kildare area. They are not in any particular order, and the inclusion and/or omission of any mooring spot should not be taken as a recommendation of its suitability or otherwise. {I will have popular mooring spots on the Royal Canal shortly.} Arguably the most popular mooring spot in the Kildare area is Lowtown. Just one mile from Robertstown, Lowtown has a marina, with haul out facilities. Diesel and water is also available and there is a slipway nearby.
Not far from Lowtown heading east you come to the canal capital of Ireland 'Robertstown.' There are shops and pubs a plenty here as well as a concrete jetty. There is also a water tap on the bank near the old canal hotel.
Closer to Dublin Sallins boasts a nice little Harbour. There are some good pubs here serving food. Sallins is also served by a train station.
Hazelhatch is a picturesque mooring near Celbirdge. It is the closest popular mooring to Dublin city. Hazelhatch has no shop but it does have two pubs and there is a train station within walking distance.
Vicarstown near Athy on the Barrow line is popular with boaters preparing to explore the River Barrow. There is a pub and a concrete jetty. Vicarstown does not have any shop so you need to come prepared. Monasterevin boasts two new harbours, one just below the lock and Bell Harbour above the lock. Monasterevin also has an attractive lifting bridge and an aqueduct. There is a water tap at the lock and the town has all services.
There are a great many more attractive moorings along Kildare's waterways that I have not included here. I hope you enjoy exploring them. |
